Field hockey is a very popular sport played throughout Australia. Contained on this page is information about the sport's status in Australia and information on about the organisations who manage our national field hockey competitions.

General information about Field Hockey in Australia

Field hockey is a sport enjoyed by a large age bracket, from people as young as 6 to veterans ages 86 and over.

Australia's two international field hockey teams are the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos, and their achievements have helped field hockey become one of Australia's most popular non professional sports.

The national hockey league for Australia is the AHL (Australian Hockey League), which has several grades of players from under 15's, through to Veterans and special Country grades.

The 2004 National Hockey Census

The 2004 National Hockey Census in which 333 clubs participated in showed a 56% to 44% male to female ratio that shows that there is a near even participation by both genders. In 2004 there were 194 754 hockey players, 55 812 (28.65%) of which were from NSW.

About 46% of hockey players participated in the winter season and the vast majority of players were members of a hockey club.

Structure of Hockey in Australia

Hockey Australia is a full member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Hockey Australia comprises membership of all eight states/territories, each of whom administers the sport within their domain. (ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC, WA).

Each State Association is comprised of regional associations, which are in turn made up of clubs. In some states, clubs affiliate directly with the state body.
